The Hill Before the Path Down

Some things are easier to change than others, that’s for sure. It’s easy to change the channel on TV or to change underwear. But when it comes to decisions in life, changes are much harder. We need more time and more energy to talk ourselves into change. At least I am like that. It takes me so much time to change something. Even buying something can take me weeks of thinking and ruminating. But on the other hand, when I make this kind of decision, everything else just goes smoothly. It feels like climbing up a hill: when you reach the top, there is a nice path down.

I guess the saying that if you practice a behavior long enough, you become really good at it is very true. I think I practice deciding a bit too much. In most cases, just the question “What is the worst that can happen?” should be enough. The worst, I think, is that you die or become so poor that you die poor. But anything else is manageable.

The reason I am writing about change is that I am thinking about leaving my current job and doing something new. The new thing is not paid that well, and the future is not so certain. But I will learn many new things and explore my creativity, which has been on life support for years now. I guess this is one of those decisions that need time and energy.

But this thinking led me to a conclusion: it shouldn’t be this hard. We should be able to follow our passion and go for something new when the chance is there. Even if the change turns out worse, I will have gained experience, met new people, and learned something I wouldn’t have learned by staying put.

And my creativity has been on life support for years. I’d rather risk a bumpy road than keep watching it fade.
