Long term vision
The quote that stuck with me this week is:
“Have a long-term vision, but a short-term focus.”
When I first heard it, it felt like I had found a holy grail. Like this was the key that could unlock all the doors. It made me feel incredibly motivated.
I think this quote can truly be a great life motto. But first, you need to answer some pretty big questions to make it effective.
The first important question is: What is my long-term vision?
Personally, the closest answer I have come to is that I want to start my own business. What kind of business? Nobody knows yet. Maybe something connected to my serious hobbies. Maybe not.
Then I started thinking very generally about my short-term focus. I began reading business books. Since communication is also very important in business, that became another skill I want to improve. For now, these are the things I want to focus on every day, so they can serve my long-term vision.
There is no problem if the vision changes over time. You can either use the skills you have learned in your new vision, or a new possibility may open along the way. And when it does, you are already skilled in important areas.
Another important thing I realized is that everything starts with action. Short-term focus is actually made up of small everyday actions and decisions. When you keep your long-term vision in mind, you naturally start doing more of the things that support it. It may also mean that you begin to see opportunities where you didn’t see them before.
“Have a long-term vision, but a short-term focus.”
Stay awesome!
