Jesus returning back to Earth...
Today I stumbled upon an interesting thought experiment. I believe it originates with Dostoevsky in The Brothers Karamazov. In it, Jesus returns to Earth during the time of the Inquisition and is threatened with execution as a heretic.
Now imagine Him coming back to Earth today. Would He be celebrated? Would anyone even recognize Him? In one version, I can imagine Him locked in a mental institution alongside other men who also believe they are Jesus.
What unsettles me is not just the possibility that we might reject Him again, but that we might do so calmly, clinically, and with full confidence that we are being rational. Perhaps the real question is not whether He would return, but whether we have built a world capable of recognizing truth when it no longer looks powerful, sanctioned, or sane.
Stay awesome!
