Confirmation bias

I put that title on purpose, because the term confirmation bias sounds so unfamiliar and like something a fancy professor would use. But at the same time, it is a concept I recently rediscovered. It plays such a huge role in our lives and can make life feel a bit like Groundhog Day.

In a way, I imagine confirmation bias as a life algorithm, similar to what we know from platforms like YouTube. It keeps showing you more of what you are already watching. Our minds work in a very similar way. What we believe to be true is what we tend to see in reality. It can go even further than that. We often start actively looking for things that confirm what we already believe.

What is funny is how naturally we do this with negative beliefs. When we believe we are bad at something, our brain will immediately start searching for proof that this is, of course, true. Looking back, it is almost funny how actively the brain can search for flaws or mistakes. It can even twist our memories so that we truly believe we have always been bad at that thing.

Confirmation bias is an interesting thing to think about. Becoming aware of it is already a big step. Using it in your favor is even better. It might sound simple, but it really is not that easy. Still, trying to think more positively about yourself and focusing more on your qualities than on your flaws can make a real difference. I believe that even this small shift can do magic in your life.

Stay awesome!
